Welcome to Lenox Sound Recording Studio - a place to record and a place to learn.

Nestled in a quiet backyard corner in Stamford, Connecticut, an hour outside of New York City, Lenox Sound is a 32-track digital sound recording studio unique in that it was built around the sound of the room. With its 17-foot cathedral ceiling and large trapezoid windows through which shards of light reveal myriad shapes and textures, musician/producer/owner John "Ratso" Gerardi has recreated that big, LIVE sound of the olden days that he heard on his AM radio – on records from Chess, Motown, and Muscle Shoals – when he was growing up.

To achieve it, two rules were set: no parallel walls and the use of different woods and stone to create uneven, textured surfaces. Tongue-and-groove exterior white pine chosen for inside the main room of the studio: half-inch on the ceiling (for resilience) and quarter-inch on the walls (to allow some of the sound to bleed through into the sound deadening material). In this way, the room has a live sound without too much high end.

An iso-booth - a room within a room with three large windows - occupies a corner of the main room. The exterior of the booth is made of wood and cultured stone. The roof, in the shape of a pentangle, is cedar-shingled. The interior is pine with a hardwood oak floor - and no parallel walls inside the booth either.

An imposing 6x8-foot thick piece of glass - part of the sound barrier that separates and seals the main room from the control room just above - is purposefully angled so the sound shoots up to the peak of the cathedral ceiling, creating that straight-up, big, LIVE sound which Ratso sought.
